Soooo, because I can never find just one craft that I enjoy doing, and do that and that alone, I got to hand dyeing me some yarn. After seeing some seriously beautiful hand painted skeins on Instagram then watching some videos on YouTube about hand painting yarn with food colouring, I thought “I need to get me some of that action!” … and the rest is history.
I’ve been getting colourful with Wilton’s Icing Colour Gel, and dyeing my own yarns!
I am so, so excited about this, the colours I’ve been getting have been so beautiful, and my experiments have been a lot of fun. For the first time in ages, I haven’t found anything frustrating about the creative process, or anything that decreases my motivation. It just feels very natural, and the more I do, the more I want to do. I actually feel a teensy bit like a mad scientist… and that’s a good thing.
The one thing that is making me a little apprehensive is the cost of the bare yarn. The food colouring yields beautiful results and is very cost effective, however the base yarn isn’t quite so affordable. All I want to do is dye and dye and dye, but I don’t want to run out of yarn as I can’t afford to just keep buying more! I keep thinking I might have to try sell some of them, just to make money to continue doing it! (I’m pretty sure every single crafter has had a similar thought pattern at one time or another….Oh, the mind of a craftaholic!)
I have bought 100g skeins, I was thinking of maybe separating them into 50g skeins instead, so I have more to play with? What do you think?
What have you been getting upto recently? Have you been trying your hand at something new, or sticking to your old faithful? I’d love to chat with you in the comments, so leave your thoughts below!
